Drug Testing Measure Goes To Governor

SALT LAKE CITY — A bill requiring some who want to participate in the Utah Family Employment program to undergo drug testing has been approved by the Senate.
House Bill 155, sponsored by Rep. Brad Wilson, R-Kaysville, and Sen. Aaron Osmond, R-South Jordan, was approved, 23-4 with two absent, by the Senate on Thursday. It now goes to the governor.
Only those who have been disqualified and then reapply for benefits will face testing, according to the bill.
Those reapplying will have to fill out a questionnaire, and if the answers suggest drug use, they would be required to take a drug test. If the drug test comes back positive for substance abuse, the person would have to undergo treatment in order to continue receiving benefits.
“This creates a fair and equitable system in order to use the taxpayer’s dollars wisely,” Wilson said after the Senate vote. |
